The story of John & Paul shirts

You aren't just a number to us. Forget about S, M, L and XL.

Ready-to-wear shirts are made for everybody and yet fit nobody. We know how hard it is to find a well-fitting shirt from our own experience. We are both fairly skinny and most shirts look like a tangled parachute around our waist.

We've decided to change that by inventing something quite unique - our system of 15 sizes based on body types.

How tall are you? And what is your body type?

Buying the right size is hard enough without having to remember a whole bunch of numbers, especially when all manufacturers number their shirts differently. We don't use numbers and guarantee you'll remember your size with ease. Why? They describe who you are.

180 centimetres, lanky your whole life? That's going to be Medium Lean.

190 centimetres, love sport? Our guess is Tall Athlete.

Devil is in the details

Shirts. What can you even do better about it? We believe you need to do a lot of things well.

It might be the little things, but they matter - they are the reason why you're going to love our shirts. More than you think.

We've started by picking out the best fabrics so you feel comfortable wearing the shirt all day. All fabrics are 100% 2-ply cotton and made in the Czech Republic by weavers with more than 60 years of tradition. They are super soft and pleasant to the touch.

We've also lowered the second button for the best look without a tie. Shirts hold well and last longer because we've increased stitch density. It is more expensive and not many people notice, but we believe it's worth making shirts properly.

Made in the Czech Republic. With Czech fabrics

T-shirt from China, shoes from Bangladesh. That is not how it should be.

Here in the Czech Republic, the textile industry has a great tradition and we want to support it as much as possible.

Fabrics are woven in Mileta Hořice - a manufacturer with more than 60-year-long tradition.

Shirts are sewn in a small factory in Central Moravia

Details matter - buttons are also from the Czech Republic.

What do other people have to say?

I'm skinny and I have a problem with all ready-to-wear shirts. They are too loose for me. Whether it's balooning sleeves or chest that would be more sutable for a women's shirt. I don't have to worry about any of that with John & Paul shirt. Shirts are made in the Czech Republic from A to Z, which is another great thing. I don't have to bear the moral burden of working conditions in Bangladesh. I know that my shirt is made by miss Zdena from Moravia who is doing ok. For me, this results in well-fitting shirt from comfortable soft cotton that doesn't become undone in the washing machine. Proper Czech shirt. - Daniel Váša

Well-made shirt from soft and pleasant cotton (in my opinion better than my other shirts from similarly woven fabrics). Because of my constitution 188/102 (not a big belly) I have chosen the largest and tallest size. It's an excellent fit, including sleeves which are usually a problem (standart longer 36-inch sleeve isn't long enough for me). A great choice for tall and lean men. - Filip Kotek

Who is behind the whole project?

We are two skinny friends, John and Paul. We come from different backgrounds but share a common goal - to sell shirts, we proudly wear.

Before John & Paul project, John Moravčík ran a successful firm with solar water heating systems. But he'd always wanted to manufacture shirts.

He needed my help to do it. I'm Paul Králíček and I have been in the men's fashion industry for the last 4 years. I run Czech blog Pravý Gentleman about classic men's fashion and style and eshop Gentleman Store. And now I also bring joy to all lean men longing for well-fitting John & Paul shirts.

We are truly proud that our shirts are made in the Czech Republic. We don't have to lie awake at night thinking about Bangladeshi children in terrible conditions. Our shirts are made by Czechs and the occasional Moravian.

Do your shirts have a better fit than bespoke ones?

It really depends on the person. Some might find our John & Paul shirt fit better than a bespoke one. some it's just as good and some a little worse

We are measuring ourself with ready-to-wear shirts rather than bespoke ones.

How long have you been working on it?

We started in February 2014 and have been working hard ever since.

We've travelled and met suppliers; tested fit and construction; made more and more shirts because there is always something to improve. And you know what? We are ecstatic about the results. We believe you will be ecstatic as well.
